Design should be a great, unexpected and considered expereince.
Beautiful Data II Workshop Identity and Publication

Creative Direction, Design & Production
Melissa Marshall

A graphic identity and both print and digital materials were designed and produced for the intensive 2015 Beautiful Data II workshop hosted by metaLAB at Harvard.

Hand stitched, hand corner die-cut welcome pack and notebooks were handcrafted with a craft paper cover for participants and featured personalized logos along with a matching nametag. Nametags were also designed for guest presenters and metaLAB crew members.

Additional print and digital materials were created and produced on site and on an as-needed basis. Some of these items included workshop signs, materials for group design thinking activities, and finally a premeditated schedule-wall which “failed to load” during the workshop’s second week (because it consisted of independent activities) with a physical motorized “rainbow-spinning-wheel-of-death.”

A final brochure and website was designed upon the completion of the workshop, featuring all participants resulting projects.

About

Studio Skiffle, shorthandedly referenced here as §, is the playful and improvisational award-winning design and art practice of M. Marshall. Marshall has passion for color, smells, culture, the real, the surreal, the known and the unknown. The work of § reflects the curious and processual methods embraced while exploring and improvising with both digital and analogue technologies.
What’s a Skiffle?

The name of § was influenced by the music genre, Skiffle. Familiar to few, Skiffle music is often played using improvised spirit and music instruments alike. When happening upon the word and musical world of Skiffle, Marshall felt a great kinship between the essence of Skiffle and her own design processes which often involve improvising, playing and exploring different mediums and techniques.
